Exceptional International book fairs, festivals for poetry, cultural events and art combined with great appreciation and participation from its population, meant it came as no surprise when Sharjah was crowned the World Book Capital of 2019 by UNESCO. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Book Capital initiative was introduced in 1996 and since has striven to appreciate and encourage publishing activities internationally. The organization awards a one-year stewardship to the city with outstanding publishing and promotional book activities every year.

The title has allowed Sharjah to be more prominent internationally in terms of knowledge, wisdom and culture. People all over the world are interested in exploring the Emirates’ heritage and ancestral roots with a desire to enhance ideas and inspire understanding. Upon accepting the award, the ruler of Sharjah, His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammed Al Qasimi said,

“I cannot fully express my happiness to be present here, as we offer a grand welcome to Sharjah World Book Capital 2019 celebrations.”

The opportunity has opened an enormous world of possibilities for the emirate. In light of which Sharjah has since embarked on a celebratory year with a huge range of exciting activities and opportunities centering around the realm of books. Sharjah aims to set an impressive benchmark with the torch in its hand this year for future World Book Capital cities. Their main goals are- Unifying Communities, Fostering Knowledge, Honoring Heritage, Empowering Children and Youth, Raising Awareness & lastly, Developing Publishing Houses. One of the major projects planned for the year and something that everyone is eagerly looking forward to is the ‘House of Wisdom’ designed by British Architectural firm Foster & Partner- a library comprising of 105,000+ books in an elegant two-storey building that will facilitate various activities and a variety of events for the literary public.

This new award in a city so prestigious and multi-award winning shows that the emirate still strives to be the finest. Sharjah has always leaned towards showcasing literacy in the most exceptional manner possible. Events are lined up for months to come for a year of exciting calligraphy exhibitions, ambitious writers and poetry sittings, publishers’ workshops, a photography competition and much more. The emirate and its people celebrate their cultural legacy with great affection, pride and gratitude.

Rudeness, ignorance & arrogance are like a thin layer of dust on a fuzzy rug. When it settles first, its barely visible, so you’re oblivious to its affects on yourself and your surroundings. It starts with someone weaker in your closed circle. Friends? Little sister? Little brother? Your child? Your partner? At first, we laugh it off – but that humor is its encouragement, its ammunition. It gives you a push do it again… because it didn’t hurt the last time you did it, right? We laughed it off!

Months pass, years even, you’ve come to a point where the dusty layer on the rug has blackened the rug. Others can see it, but you can’t. Others avoid and sometimes dread your company because of your ignorant, rude behavior. The ones closest to you ask you to STOP! You’re being so rude! You’re so badtameez! Along the road, you’ve sometimes spun out of control in regards to your elders too! Your parents/ Partner/ Siblings/ anyone closest to you are hurt, but they still have hope, they still have hope that you will become better…

The rug has become filthy, but there is always a way to cleanse it and start anew. NEVER think that if you start to make a change towards a better you, people will make fun of you or disregard you. People closest to you, who really care about you will always motivate you and support you to be a better person. Begin exactly where it all started. Start with the youngest person in your circle- Be kind to them, nothing drastic… Just a small smile can do when you see them, because when they smile back at you, your heart will flutter and that’s the first BIG little step to infinite possibilities. Offering a helping hand, asking someone how you’re doing; Baby step, literal baby steps. Lift the dust very gradually with small good deeds…

You’ve taken this into your daily routine now, it’s hard for all those rude, ignorant, arrogant feelings to manifest within you because you have a better, much positive control over yourself. Your aura is much lighter, in a better place now. And you never know how many people you’ve influenced throughout your journey to a better YOU? A simple smile you gave to a stranger, made the stranger feel so much better about their otherwise drowsy day, they might have done something positive too and passed on the vibe?

The key is to never forget that KINDNESS has a ripple effect, domino effect; You give it once to the universe, it always finds a way back to you. Always try to be KIND to other people, even if they are living with you, around you, even if you feel like they don’t need it because they seem so happy. You never know what a simple act of kindness can do. It can change a life, it can save life.

Synopsis from Goodreads: ” With Omega Point destroyed, Juliette doesn’t know if the rebels, her friends, or even Adam are alive. But that won’t keep her from trying to take down The Reestablishment once and for all. Now she must rely on Warner, the handsome commander of Sector 45. The one person she never thought she could trust. The same person who saved her life. He promises to help Juliette master her powers and save their dying world . . . but that’s not all he wants with her. “

Good Thoughts: The character developments were impressive, loved how they matured Juliette, loved how they explored more aspects of Warner. I loved how the author kept us eager for more of the couple intimacy even with all that she gave, it never felt like it was enough! The characters individually and together were BRILLIANT. And can i just say how much i love KENJI?! Best friend, please take tips!! (JK)

Bad Thoughts: The first book was fast-paced – a bit boring? Yes, but fact-paced. The second book was a wee bit slower than the first one, had a lot more to give but took me a while to finish it. Then came the third book. OK.. I wanted to explore Juliette’s relationship with Warner in depth and how she helped him cope with the ‘monster’ within. Not to mention, the friendship Kenji and Juliette had, it definitely (in my humble opinion) needed more insight. The ending of the book was way too rushed, it felt like Tahereh got tired in the end and just gave us a rapid conclusion. I did not like the ending at all.

Final Thoughts & Recommendations: This series is for those who like bad-ass fictional boyfriends with a touch of vulnerability and bad-ass girl power motivational characters. It gives the reader a great laugh, friendship, love, insight on loneliness, sci-fi, dystopian and hot romance touches throughout the books, I have huge respect for authors who manage to make us hate the characters we once loved dearly (evil & deadly). I 100% recommend this series to you & if you like such stories, a few series you may wanna look into (personal recommendations) – Court Series, Grisha Series, Ember in the Ashes & The Iluminae Series.
